What is the average penis size?

The average penis size varies among individuals and populations, with natural variation being entirely normal.

What Is the Average Penis Size?

The average penis size refers to the measurement of the organ in its non-erect state as well as in its erect state. For younger males, the size of their penis grows during puberty which may be around the ages of 9 and 14. It tends to reach maximum size by the time a male has reached the age of 20.

A comprehensive review of 20 different studies was published in the British Journal of Urology, which analysed the data of 12,521 adult men. Measurements with a ruler and tape were done on different populations and ethnic groups to determine an average size. The findings were that the average length when not erect ranged from 7-10 centimeters, while the average length of an erect ranged from 12-16 centimeters.

This above average penis size is of adult males and is more so a general guideline. Individuals should understand variation in size is very normal.

    How to Measure a Penis?

To get an accurate size, the length and girth should be measured. To measure the length, the ruler should be pressed into the groin and measured from the base to the tip. And to measure girth, a tape can be wrapped around the widest part of the penis.

    What Is a Micropenis?

Some males are born with a micropenis which is when it's unusually small due to hormonal or genetic factors. It is still able to fulfill the same actions as an average-sized one. However, people can get very dissatisfied with their appearance and opt for surgery to improve it.

Sometimes it may appear smaller due to additional skin around it. This is referred to as a buried penis and surgery can resolve that.

    Factors Affecting Penis Size

There are several factors that can influence size, including genetics, hormonal levels, age, and overall health. Studies were conducted to see if there was any correlation between BMI and penile length, and a weak link was established. There are other micro contributors also.

    Hormones Affecting Penis Size

There is a possibility that the hormone production of an expectant mother can influence the male fetus. If the female produces little amounts of HCG, the hormone used to develop testosterone, could lead to a difference in penis size. Similarly, if the fetus had a sensitivity to androgen absorption and did not respond to testosterone they could have a different size.

    Nutrition affecting Penis Size

A malnourished pregnant woman could pass on the lack of nutrients to the fetus. Thus, it prevents the proper growth of the fetus, including their genitalia. Similarly lack of nutrients in teens undergoing puberty can cause delayed puberty sometimes resulting in smaller testicles and penis.

    Environment Affecting Penis Size

Many environmental chemicals can negatively affect penile development in the fetus. This can happen because they act as endocrine disruptors and inhibit the production of hormones.

    Does Penis Size Matter?

Society has formed many misconceptions about penile length. It is believed that a larger penis may lead to more sexual satisfaction or equates to greater masculinity. Both of which are not scientifically proven. Due to this myth males may feel the need to get penis enlargement which again has no such validity. However does poses great health risks.

While society has made us think size matters, it is important to understand that there is not necessarily a correlation between size and sexual performance or satisfaction. Communication, mutual respect and understanding between partners are more critical for a fulfilling sexual experience.

Can You Make Your Penis Bigger?

It is important to understand that each male is different and what may be classified as socially desirable is based on incorrect data. Due to the incorrect reporting some males may find themselves experiencing low self confidence/self image and anxiety on performance.

Some treatment options to enhance penis size include penis pumps/vacuums, traction method or surgery. The first two being non invasive methods are temporary and can stretch the penis appear bigger for a few hours to months.

    PDE 5 Inhibitors

The PDE 5 Inhibitors are usually prescribed for erectile dysfunction (ED). They can help achieve fuller erection by allowing more blood to enter the blood stream in the penis. Therefore if the penis size is a concern, PDE-5 inhibitor may help increase size in the erect state only.

    When to Seek Penis Enlargement?

There are certain options to increase the size of the small one. These include such as hormone treatment, surgery and other techniques. It is usually reserved for males with a flaccid penis length of 4cm or less or an erect length less than 7cm.

These treatments carry risks and most people think they have a short penis as they overestimate the average size. In one study 67% of males were seeking enlargement though they weren't considered small in size.

    Consult a Health Professional

It is important to promote body positivity to combat insecurities around penis size. Open and honest conversations in intimate relationships can help empower individuals to embrace their bodies. Furthermore, consulting a healthcare professional can help provide accurate information, support, or treatment options.
