What is Mounjaro?

Common side effects
The common side effects reported as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation and abdominal pain. In a study of 2500 participants, around 80% of them reported experiencing mild to moderate side effects as listed above. Serious side effects
There are infrequent but severe side effects which have been reported including acute pancreatitis and gallbladder disease. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and severe episodes of diarrhea can lead to dehydration and which can create kidney problems.
Tirzepatide is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN). The medication comes with a warning regarding a potential risk of thyroid tumors, although this observation was solely made in animal trials.
How to manage the side effects of Mounjaro?
Gastrointestinal issues

- Avoid rich, spicy or fatty foods that may aggravate nausea.
- Eating ginger, or having ginger tea/supplements may also help alleviate nausea.
- For vomiting, follow the same guidelines.
Diarrhoea occurs as the body adjusts to the medication:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or electrolytes.
- Avoid high-fiber foods, dairy and caffeine which can worsen diarrhoea.
- Consider medicines like over the counter Imodium.
Appetite
A decreased appetite, though beneficial for weight loss can lead to reduced nutrient intake.
- A well balanced diet with sufficient vitamins and minerals.
- Consult a dietitian if you find it challenging to maintain a nutritious diet.
Injection site
There is redness, itching or swelling at the injection may occur.
- The injection site must be rotated to avoid irritating the same area.
- A cold compress to the area before and after the injection.
- A proper technique can minimise irritation.
Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar)
It is not common to get low blood sugar, but when combined with other diabetic medications it can occur.

- Please ensure you get adequate rest and sleep.
