It is a contraceptive vaginal ring used to prevent pregnancy. The ring contains two hormones etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol which are gradually released into the blood stream. It will work to prevent pregnancy. 

How does Nuvaring work?

Nuvaring has two hormones, progestogen and oestrogen. The active ingredient is etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol. After inserting the ring into the vagina, it releases small amounts of hormones into the bloodstream. The hormones work to prevent pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries every month.

The dual hormones also thicken the cervical mucus which stops the sperm from moving through the cervix hence preventing pregnancy. 

Is Nuvaring effective?

With accurate usage, the ring is more than 99% effective. However as certain factors can affect the effectiveness, it is more likely to be 91% effective. 

How to use Nuvaring?

It is easy to insert and remove the ring yourself. The vaginal ring must be inserted on the correct day of the monthly cycle and left in place for 3 weeks at a time. It should be regularly monitored to ensure it's actively in place to provide protection against pregnancy. 

At the end of the third week, have a week break and take the thing out. This will allow for a monthly period to occur.

Inserting the ring

To begin, wash hands thoroughly before inserting or removing the ring. It should be inserted in a comfortable position, such as squatting, standing with one leg up or lying down. The ring should be held between the thumb and index finger, pressed together and inserted in. There should be no discomfort once it's in the vagina.

What to do if the ring falls out

If the Nuvaring has fallen out, pregnancy protection may not be there. If it has been out of the vagina for less than 3 hours, it will still protect if reentered. Simple rinse with cold/lukewarm water and re-insert it. 

If the ring has been out for longer than 3 hours, it may not protect from pregnancy. 

Nuvaring side effects

Like most medicines, Nuvaring too can cause side effects. The likeliness or severity varies person to person. Individuals who may get persistent or severe side effects should consult with their doctor for advice. 

The common side effects include abdominal pain, breast tenderness, nausea and headaches. The ring falling out can also be considered a common side effect. When females use any combined hormonal contraceptives they are at an increased risk of blood clots and they should get regularly checked for that.
